Still Making a Difference 33 Years Later
…and Counting
A common denominator can be found in all of the situations below. Can you identify what it is?
A woman who is working her way through school doesn’t have the money to buy enough food for herself and her three kids. She turns to a program that will allow her to buy twice the amount of food she needs to feed herself and kids - for half the money.
A man sits on death row. He’s convicted of a crime that he did not commit. He has exhausted all avenues and loses all hope for exoneration. Five days before he is to be executed, he is freed. All of this due in part to an organized team of ordinary citizens who didn’t want to witness an innocent man die.
A young man around the age of 9 years suddenly finds himself without his father. His mother is too busy to pay any attention to him because she works three jobs to make ends meet. The young man finds himself unable to focus in school and he’s having problems relating to his classmates. The school system now labels him as ‘behaviorally challenged’ and in turn, he now becomes a statistic. In steps an organization that takes the young man, molds his young mind, gives him a reason to believe in himself and change his outlook on life. All of this is done with kindness, love and patience.
The common denominator in each of the situations above is S.H.A.P.E. Community Center , located in Houston ’s Third Ward. SHAPE is an institution that has had its hand on the pulse of the community for over thirty three years. The programs created and offered by SHAPE are geared to address the needs of the community in the areas of education, cultural enrichment, employment, economic development, crime/juvenile delinquency prevention programs and many, many more.
The situations listed above are actual scenarios and events that have occurred at SHAPE.
SHAPE was able to address each one by the utilization of programs that have been instituted specifically to assist those in the community..
